UPDATE: Storm event - 4.00pm - Monday, 23 February 2026

On display until 24 February 2026, 05:00 PM

Following last weekend’s storm event, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to the many organisations and our community who have worked to keep people safe and get things back on track.

We’ve had many supportive messages over the past week thanking crews for their long hours, weekend work, and quick responses. Comments like 'Awesome work' and 'Much appreciation for the fantastic clean-up teams' have meant a lot to those on the ground.

We continue to support those without power and limited access and appreciate residents out there still checking in with neighbours, friends and whānau.

A special thank you to some of the organisations working across the district, including:
  • Whanganui Alliance/Downer NZ
  • Powerco
  • Tree Truck Ltd
  • Red Cross
  • Fulton Hogan
  • Higgins (for their mahi on state highways)
  • Rivercity Tree Services (for their mahi on state highways)
  • Community Patrol
  • Chorus
  • GasNet
  • Rural Support Trust

ROADS

All roads are currently OPEN except for:

❌ Raupiu Road is closed at the end.

❌ Old Parapara Road is completely blocked a couple of metres from SH4 at the Whanganui end; however, it can be accessed from the other end.

Please drive with care if you’re travelling in rural areas.

PARKS

All parks are currently OPEN except for:

❌Williams Domain in Whanganui East – contractors are on site today and we’re hoping it will reopen by the end of the day.

❌Lake Wiritoa (beach area) – contractors are scheduled to be on site over the next few days. We expect it will be open by the weekend.

Please take care if you’re visiting Kowhai Park (north of Jones Street). The pathway is clear, but some fallen branches remain in grassed areas.

Waitahinga Trails will be assessed this coming Friday.
