Whanganui Rocks is back supporting the emergency services world again this year, which means it’s time for a rock hunt with your family and friends. The Whanganui Civil Defence Emergency Management team have begun hiding specially marked rocks in places around Whanganui for others to find, re-hide or keep. These rocks, which were provided and painted by Erina Cresswell, are distinctive and bright, but don’t let that fool you- they’ll be well hidden.

There are two rocks painted with the Civil Defence mascot, Stan the Dog, on them. If you are quick enough and clever enough to find one of these rocks, you will win one of two Grab and Go survival kits to help you get disaster ready. The Civil Defence team will also be hiding a dozen other smaller rocks. These ones, with the CD logo on them, will reward you with a Stan soft toy. Details on what to do are on the underside of all the rocks.

Whanganui District Council Emergency management Officer, Anthony Edwards says “The goal of the Civil Defence’s involvement in Whanganui Rocks is to raise awareness, especially with kids, and to get people thinking about disaster preparation so they can stay safe during emergencies.”

Everyone in Whanganui can get involved in Whanganui Rocks by getting out and searching for hidden painted rocks around the city, or by painting their own and hiding them for someone else to find.

You can check out some of the rocks being painted and hidden on the Whanganui Rocks Facebook group.

Best of luck to everyone getting involved!
