The hunt is on for a theme song for the Whanganui Festival of Cultures.
Organisers are running a competition for an original song which will be played at this year’s Festival and may become the theme song for ongoing Festivals.
The 2014 Whanganui Festival of Cultures, which showcases diverse ethnic communities within the Whanganui area, takes place on Saturday, October 18. The Festival includes music and dance, as well as food and information stalls.
Wanganui District Council Arts Coordinator Debbie Kapohe says the song competition will be a “fun build-up to the event”.
“The song will be performed at the Festival, so the writer will get a wide exposure for their work. There is also the chance that the song could be used in future to promote the event. Plus, you could win $100!”
The Festival has been running since 2012. Last year, more than 4000 people attended, 17 stall holders sold food from around the world and 20 cultural groups performed.
To enter the song competition, all you have to do is to record your song as an mp3 file and email your entry (clearly labelled ‘WFOC Theme Song Entry’) to debbie.kapohe@wanganui.govt.nz . Each person is allowed two entries.
The judges include two music specialists and a Festival committee member. The closing date is 12 noon on Friday, September 26, and the winner will be announced at the Festival.
