At its meeting on Thursday, October 9, the Strategy and Policy Committee will discuss the possibility of a rate-payer funded kerbside waste collection service for urban residents.

Currently private companies collect kerbside waste on a user pays basis.

If the Council decides to investigate further, its Waste Minimisation Working Party will look at options and costs and these may be included in the 10 Year Plan 2015-2025.

Chair of the Strategy and Policy Committee, Cr Philippa Baker-Hogan, says the reason the Council is considering this service is to see whether the cost people are currently paying to dispose of their waste can be reduced.

“One of the goals of the Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan is to investigate ways to provide more effective and efficient waste and waste minimisation services. A rate-payer funded kerbside waste collection could save consumers service costs.”
