After more than a century, the Royal Wanganui Opera House box office is on the move to provide better access for ticket-buyers.
From Monday, 20 November 2017 the box office will operate from what was formerly the manager’s office, attached to the annex at the rear of the Opera House site.
The ticket office in the Opera House foyer will continue to be open for sales and ticket collection during show nights and as part of the theatre’s behind-the-scenes tours.
Team Leader, Whanganui Venues and Events, Rachel O’Connor, says the move has been driven mainly by access considerations, with the new office easily reached by those who are in a wheelchair or have other accessibility issues. Ample off-street parking, including a disability park, is available from St Hill Street and will be clearly signposted, as will the new box office.
The new workspace has taken the building’s heritage into consideration, with Victorian-style wallpaper, black velvet reception chairs and two chandeliers used to complement the space.
“We know that some people have struggled to use the current box office because of the steps leading up to the foyer. This space not only solves those issues but also is lighter and warmer for staff. We are looking forward to giving our visitors a warm welcome in the new box office from Monday, 20 November,” Ms O’Connor says.
Venue and Events Co-ordinator Kirsty Melville and Ticketing and Tour Co-ordinator Shirna Matthews will work from the new box office space. All office hours, contact numbers and web access remain the same.
The Royal Wanganui Opera House opened in 1900 and is renowned nationally and internationally for its architecture and acoustics.
