Dog Registration Fees


​​​​​​Whanganui District Council gives notice, as required by the Dog Control Act 1996, Section 37(b), of the Dog Registration Fees for the year 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. These fees were set by a resolution of the Council on Tuesday, 10 April 2018. ​​​

* Non-neutered/spayed and non-working dogs will be identified first when calculating first three dogs. Please note, discounts do not apply to reduced fees.

Dog registration fees must be paid in full by Tuesday, 31 July 2018 to receive a prompt payment discount. Penalties will apply after 1 September, 2018.

Payment options

Online payments by credit card / debit card: These can be made by visiting and clicking on ‘Pay It’ then ‘Pay dog registration’. You need a RealMe@ Login and must know your client number, which is on your dog registration notice, to use this method of payment.

• Internet banking: Use the Council’s ANZ bank account 01 0790 0157888 02. Please quote your name, client number and dog registration number in the particulars and reference fields.

• Cheque: Post to PO Box 637, Whanganui. Please return your dog registration notice and attach your cheque.

• Cash or Eftpos: Visit us at 101 Guyton Street, Monday to Friday, 8.00am-5.00pm. Please bring your dog registration notice with you.

Microchipp​​​​ing of dogs

From 1 July 2006 the following are required to be microchipped:

  • All dogs registered in New Zealand for the first time (excluding working dogs that are exempt);
  • All dogs that have been classified as dangerous or menacing on or after 1 December 2003 (including working dogs);
  • All unregistered dogs that are impounded;
  • All registered dogs that are impounded twice (within the same registration year).
