The Smithfield Road drainage upgrade has been identified as a key requirement for providing service capacity within the stormwater and wastewater network to improve its performance.

The new stormwater pipeline will be constructed to resolve capacity constraints in the existing stormwater mains that are close to 100-years-old along Konini Street, London Street and Smithfield Road.

The new wastewater pipeline will also be constructed to cater for the increasing volume of wastewater on Smithfield Road. This project is part of a wider programme of works within the council’s 30-year infrastructure strategy to upgrade the level of service and meet the requirements of the growing development demands throughout the network.

The existing stormwater main along Konini Street, London Street and Smithfield Road is more than 100-years-old and has reached its end of service. In the meantime, the existing wastewater on Smithfield Road cannot cater for the increasing volume due to new developments in this area. Therefore, the diameter of the sewer main will be upgraded as well. The increased diameter of the new stormwater main will also allow for projected effects of long-term climate change.

The project has been divided into three stages. Details for stage one and two are below. Stage three work will begin around July 2024.

Stage one

Drainage upgrade

Stage one consists of 325-metres of new stormwater pipe and wastewater main that will be constructed from 23 Smithfield Road to the Moore Avenue / Smithfield Road intersection.

Project schedule

  • Traffic management set-up and site establishment – 13 March 2023 to 17 March 2023
  • Construction work – 27 March 2023 to 21 July 2023
  • Site disestablished / reinstated – 24 July 2023 to 19 August 2023 (please note this extended reopening date, previously stated as Monday 7 August)

Stage two

Drainage upgrade

For stage two, 474m of 900mm new stormwater pipe (from Moore Avenue to Konini Street along Smithfield Road and London Street) will be installed and 200m of 225mm wastewater main (from Moore Avenue to Brooking Street along Smithfield Rd) will be constructed.

Project schedule

  • Traffic management set-up and site establishment – 23 August 2023 to 28 August 2023
  • Construction work – 28 August 2023 to 20 March 2024
  • Site disestablished / reinstated – 21 March 2024 to 5 April 2024.

Benefits and outcomes

This project will benefit the Smithfield Road, London Street and Konini Street areas by:

  • improving the level of service
  • increasing asset life
  • reducing flood risks with a better drainage network
  • providing resilience to the projected effects of long-term climate change.
