Whanganui District Council’s second Household Hazardous Waste Day for 2022 will be held on Saturday, 19 November. The last day to register hazardous waste with the council is Monday, 14 November at 12 noon.

The council’s waste advisor, Stuart Hylton, says hazardous waste day is a great opportunity to clear out shelves and garages and make your home safer for pets and children.

“When you drop items off for hazardous waste day you can rest assured they will be disposed of in a way that’s environmentally best practice.”

He says it’s really important hazardous items are registered with the council before the drop-off day so the team can arrange for correct disposal.

“Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a ‘first in, first served’ basis, so head over to the Household Hazardous Waste Day section of the council website and fill in the form.

“Once you’ve registered, the council will contact you with a location and time between 9.00am and 1.00pm on Saturday, 19 November,” Stuart Hylton says.

“On the drop-off day, you just remain in your car while contractors collect the items.”

Hazardous items you can register include pesticides, solvents, paint, oils, cleaning chemicals and aerosols. For a full list and to register, go to https://whanganui.govt.nz/Household-Hazardous-Waste-Day

For advice and guidance on hazardous waste that cannot be accepted on Household Hazardous Waste Day, see the A-Z directory on the Resource Whanganui website: https://resourcewhanganui.org.nz

The Resource Whanganui website was developed as a collaboration between Whanganui District Council, Sustainable Whanganui and the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre.

“Household Hazardous Waste Day has proved popular in the past,” says Stuart Hylton. “In March this year we had 47 registrations and collected 2.2 tonnes of hazardous waste – so make sure you get in and register now.”
