A group of 23 people were welcomed as New Zealand citizens at a ceremony at the Council Chamber in the first week of September.
The new citizens are Mrs Wendy Bullock (British), Mr Albert Santos Favis (Filipino), Mrs Sabine Hormann (German), Mrs Tiji Jose (Indian), Mrs Lissy Joseph (Indian), Mrs Neethu Joy (Indian), Mr Rene Cristian Olmos (Argentinian), Miss Nilda Serrano Pagba (Filipino), Mr Alfons Reitsma (Dutch), Mrs Lisa Ann Rodgers (British), Mrs Amie Lea Simpson (American), Mrs Patricia Ann Birkinshaw (British), Mr Ulyses Pizarro Espiritu (Filipino), Ms Elizabeth Margaret Wilson Gray (Australian), Dr Daniel Aron Hermann (Hungarian), Mr Zsolt Gabor Hermann (Hungarian), Mrs Reka Hermann (Hungarian), Master Benjamin David Hermann (Hungarian), Mrs Linda Kealey (American), Mr Gurdev Singh Sandhu (Indian), Mr Harry Paul Stobbe (Canadian), Ms Renata Szarvas (Hungarian).
Mayor Hamish McDouall, who hosted the ceremony, said the event was “yet again, packed.”
“It is always very exciting to see a range of nationalities make New Zealand and Whanganui their home. Amongst the new citizens, a record five Hungarians will now call Whanganui home adding more diversity and culture to our district. They join others from various places in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe.
“Some of these people have lived here for a very long time and have contributed massively to the arts, education, business and health sectors. These people have all been welcomed by the citizens of Whanganui over time which is a tribute to our hospitality.”
