Dublin Street Bridge resurfacing - UPDATED

The Dublin Street Bridge will be closed for resurfacing from 6.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday, 24 February 2018.

If the weather is wet on this date, the work will be rescheduled for Sunday, 25 February 2018.

This date has changed from what was previously advertised (Sunday, 18 February 2018) due to forecasted wet weather early next week which would affect the new surface.

Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to access the bridge at all times.

Thank you for your patience.

9 February 2018

Due to a number of circumstances, including forecasted wet weather and an event on the river, the date for the advertised Dublin Street Bridge resurfacing work has been changed to Sunday, 18 February 2018.

The bridge will be closed from 6.00am to 5.00pm on this date.

If wet weather prevents the work being completed on 18 February 2018, the back-up days are Saturday 24 February 2018 and Sunday 25 February 2018.

After a recent check of the bridge surface by the Whanganui Roading Alliance, it was determined the bridge needed to be resurfaced in 2018 to prevent water from penetrating the under-seal membrane, which could result in further maintenance.

Polymer Modified Emulsion, a chip-seal binder material for high-stress traffic areas, will be used for the surface. While the current structure is more than 100 years old, the bridge is structurally sound and safe to use.

The work will be carried out on the weekend because there is less traffic.

Cyclist and pedestrian access will be available at all times.

Dublin Street Bridge is one of the Whanganui District’s critical assets, with 10,000 vehicle movements per day.

The Whanganui Roading Alliance is an alliance between the Whanganui District Council and Downer Group to jointly undertake the maintenance and repair of Council-owned roads in the Whanganui District.
