Mayor Annette Main today named Cr Hamish McDouall as the district’s Deputy Mayor.

The appointment was confirmed at the first meeting of the 2013-2016 Council where the Mayor, councillors and members of the Wanganui Rural Community Board were sworn in.

Cr McDouall was first elected to the Wanganui District Council in 2010 and was the highest-polling councillor in the 2013 election.

It is intended to confirm other appointments and the committee structure at the Council’s meeting in December.

“It’s really important that we streamline both the committee structure and the process of how our committees will operate,” Mayor Main said.

“That’s why we are not rushing into making decisions about the structure. In the meantime, any business will be dealt with through the November and December Council meetings.”

Mayor Main said the Council’s first meeting had been a great occasion for the elected members, their family and friends and the members of the community who attended.

“I particularly want to pay tribute to Whanganui Iwi for the role they played in making this a truly memorable occasion and to the many people who came along to support our new Council and Rural Community Board. It was a wonderful welcome for us before we get stuck into the hard work ahead.”
