Gloucester Street stormwater upgrade
- Project typePipe construction
- Project value$898,585
- Contractor nameWarner Construction
- Completion Date04 September 2020
A new stormwater main will be constructed in Gloucester Street to upgrade stormwater service levels and to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in the low-lying areas of the catchment north of London Street and Halswell Street.
The $898,585 project is expected to take around six months, weather permitting, with work starting on Monday, 2 March 2020. Construction will start at the intersection of Somme Parade/Goucester Street and will continue along Gloucester Street to the intersection of London Street/Gloucester Street, then turn to end at the intersection of London Street/Halswell Street.
The 600 mm and 750 mm concrete pipes will be constructed at a depth up to 4.5 metres. Seven manholes will also be installed at a depth of up to 5.0 metres.
The first three weeks of the project will involve the closure of Somme Parade between Halswell and Glasgow Streets. The closure will allow contractors to work safely and provide access for heavy machinery. Residents will have access to their properties at all times.
When construction crosses the Gloucester Street/Glasgow Street intersection, a stop/go operation will be in place for traffic safety.
Road closure details
Somme Parade between Halswell and Glasgow streets from 7.00am on Monday, 2 March to 6.00pm on Monday, 6 April 2020
During this period, the following access provisions will be in place:
- Access for residents and emergency services only will be provided at all times to properties on Somme Parade and Gloucester Street
- All trucks and buses must use Pitt and Glasgow streets at all times during the closure because of low trees and the roundabout in Halswell Street
- Light vehicles are to use Halswell Street only
- Gloucester Street from Glasgow Street to Somme Parade will also be closed.
Later in the project, Somme Parade will again need to be closed to link the new stormwater pipe to the outlet on the banks of the Whanganui River.
Contractors Warner Construction have advised that every effort will be made to get the work done as quickly as possible, with minimal disruption.
Hours of work will be Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 6.00pm. Residents will be notified if work is required on Saturdays.
