Gloucester Street inground services upgrade

  • Project typePipe construction
  • Project value$898,585
  • Contractor nameWarner Construction
  • Completion Date09 October 2020

A new inground services main will be constructed in Gloucester Street to upgrade service levels and to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in the low-lying areas of the catchment north of London Street and Halswell Street.

Work began on the $898,585 project on Monday, 2 March 2020 and is expected to be completed by Friday, 9 October 2020, weather permitting. Construction will start at the intersection of Somme Parade/Goucester Street and will continue along Gloucester Street to the intersection of London Street/Gloucester Street, then turn to end at the intersection of London Street/Halswell Street.

The 600 mm and 750 mm concrete pipes will be constructed at a depth up to 4.5 metres. Seven manholes will also be installed at a depth of up to 5.0 metres.

The first three weeks of the project will involve the closure of Somme Parade between Halswell and Glasgow Streets. The closure will allow contractors to work safely and provide access for heavy machinery. Residents will have access to their properties at all times.

When construction crosses the Gloucester Street/Glasgow Street intersection, Glasgow Street will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals in place.

Contractors Warner Construction have advised that every effort will be made to get the work done as quickly as possible, with minimal disruption.

Hours of work will be Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 6.00pm. Residents will be notified if work is required on Saturdays.

Road closure (updated 9 July 2020)

As work progresses towards the Glasgow Street intersection, Glasgow Street will be reduced to one lane and controlled by temporary traffic signals at the Glasgow Street/Gloucester Street intersection from Wednesday, 15 July until Wednesday, 5 August 2020 (weather permitting).

The lights will operate 24/7 until work is complete. No road closures will be necessary.

Gloucester Street between Glasgow Street and London Street will be closed to all traffic, except residents. Entry for residents will be via Glasgow Street and London Street, with residents able to exit via London Street only.

Gloucester Street will also be closed to all traffic, except residents, between Glasgow Street and Somme Parade. Residents can enter and exit the block via Somme Parade only.
