The lack of rain and total fire ban in the Whanganui district has led to a temporary halt to Council gravel road grading and rural roadside mowing.
Grading when it’s really dry creates extreme dust clouds as the fine material rises to the top, obscuring vision, causing general discomfort and contaminating water tanks.
Council rural roadside mowing is also on hold because of the risk of sparking a fire in these tinder dry conditions.
As growth has stopped, sightlines for road users shouldn’t be affected. If you’re driving on gravel roads, please slow down to keep dust to a minimum to respect residents and stock along the road.
Thank you for your patience.
