Temporary change to freedom camping site access

No longer on display. Expired on June 06, 2022, 12:00 PM

If you’re accessing the freedom camping site on Anzac Parade or facilities nearby like the Wanganui Motor Boat Club this month and in early June, please be aware that there will be only one entry/exit point as work begins to improve the resilience of the stopbanks where roads cross through the area. Construction is expected to take about three weeks.

The other entry/exit site near the Whanganui Multisport Club will be closed while the roadway is being raised. Access to all facilities, the freedom camping site and public toilets will remain open during the work.

This is one of three sites in the Kowhai Park reserve area where the road is being raised – work began on the roadway near the pumpkin barbecue area at Kowhai Park a few weeks ago. The road has been raised, and a new kerb and channel installed. Final road surfacing is expected to be complete in early June. Work will begin on a third site near the Nile Street entrance to the park later this year.

This is a joint project with Horizons Regional Council. Downer is the contractor.

Thanks for your patience during this work.
