After years of wear and tear from heavy traffic, a section of Heads Road between Abbot Street and Beach Road is about to get a major rebuild.
Work to replace the rough road surface is scheduled to begin on Monday, 15 February 2021 and is expected to take until the end of March, weather permitting.
The most heavily used sections of the road, which includes a rail crossing, will be reinforced and strengthened. This includes the Abbot Street and Beach Road intersections.
Whanganui District Council senior roading engineer Brent Holmes says while the affected section of road has received regular maintenance, this is the first major work there for several decades.
As it is part of the rail corridor, KiwiRail has approved the work and will have personnel available to monitor rail signalling. Nearby industries have also been informed.
Traffic delays may be expected as stop/go traffic management will be in place and the roadway reduced to one lane. At this stage, no road closures are expected, Brent Holmes says.
