Restricted fire season – Whanganui coast and urban area

Fire and Emergency NZ has advised that the Manawatū-Whanganui Coastal Zone will move to a restricted fire season from 8am on Friday 12 January until further notice due to warm temperatures, drying winds and a lack of rainfall.
A restricted fire season means anyone planning on lighting an open-air fire will need a permit.
Please be aware of the fire risk conditions – if in doubt, don't light!

Apply for rates remission

For the 2023/24 financial year (starting in July 2023) the council is making a one-off rates remission (reduction) of up to $500 available for households facing a rates rise higher than $700.

Whanganui Rural Community Board By-election - Whanganui subdivision

A by-election for the Whanganui Rural Community Board will be held by postal vote on Tuesday, 18 February 2020.

In the October 2019 Local Election, David Wells – as the only nomination – was elected unopposed to the Whanganui subdivision, which has two members. A by-election will be held to fill the vacancy.

By-election nominations open on Monday, 25 November 2019 and close at 12 noon on Monday, 23 December 2019.
