New strategy to drive digital innovation and opportunity

Whanganui District Council’s new Digital Strategy, aims to create a framework to drive digital innovation and opportunity in Whanganui, in partnership with the community.

The Council’s Policy and Governance Manager, Stephanie Macdonald-Rose, says, “Whanganui has been recognised nationally and internationally for its digital innovation and inclusion for some time. This strategy is about building on this reputation and working with the community to drive digital innovation and opportunity in Whanganui.

“We live in a world where technological change is fast-paced, with the job market forecast to be transformed by technology in coming years.

“We want to build on the great things we are already doing as a district in the digital space, while also setting our sights on emerging opportunities for our community.”

Stephanie Macdonald-Rose says the Council engaged with a number of stakeholders when drafting the strategy. “We asked them to think about our strengths and opportunities; our gaps and challenges; and any new or innovative technology that could benefit or disrupt Whanganui.”

“A key message to emerge from these sessions was a desire to see Whanganui succeed by choosing to be ‘digital by design’. This means that the district has a proactive approach to preparing for the future.”

“However, it is also important to make sure that no one is left behind. The importance of this was reflected in some of the 15 submissions we received and some changes were made to ensure that these inclusion and equity commitments were clearer.”

The key focus areas of the Digital Strategy, which is now available on the Council website(PDF, 5MB) , are connectivity and inclusion, a high-value creative economy, innovation and a digital council.

“Although this strategy was formulated by the Council, delivery of its actions will be a collaborative, community-focused effort. Now it has been approved, a detailed action plan will be developed with our community partners,” says Stephanie Macdonald-Rose.
