Media release #45 Wanganui District weather event - 4.00pm 14 July 2015

Published on 14 July 2015

All urban roads in the Wanganui District are open and there has been tremendous progress on our rural roads.

The only sections now closed are Matahiwi Track (approximately 800m from Whanganui River Road) and Ahu Ahu Valley Road (last 3km) plus No 3 Line from the urban boundary to Kaimatira Road. This contrasts with the 79% (488km) of district roads that were closed on June 22.

4WD only access remains on:

  • Junction Road
  • Kauarapaoa Road
  • Creek Road
  • Kaukatea Valley Road
  • Bruce Road
  • Matahiwi Track (first 800m only then the rest of the road is closed)

All other roads in the district are now open and available to 2WD, cars etc. Truck and trailer contractors who wish to gain access to rural roads should contact the Roading Alliance on 027 444 8346 for an update.

All roads will be slippery if there is any significant rain and must be driven with extreme care.

Ruapehu District Council advises that the Raetihi-Pipiriki Road is still under significant flood damage and the route from Pipiriki south on the Whanganui River Road remains closed.

Whilst most of our roads now have limited access, we still have thousands of slips, washouts and dropouts to deal with before all our roads are returned to their previous state.

In the urban area we expected to have them all fixed within 12 months, with the majority repaired in the coming summer months. The rural area will take longer as the number, size and scale is much larger but we expect to have this work complete within three years.
