More than 4000 masters athletes will converge on Whanganui from this Friday, 3 February 2023 for the 34th Downer New Zealand Masters Games.

Masters Games manager, Heather Cox, says the atmosphere ahead of the games is one of excitement, with the Games Village ready to welcome locals, visitors and their supporters for 10 days of fun sporting action.

“We invite people to join us this Friday for the official opening of the games, featuring a pōwhiri and performances from Brass Whanganui. Gather first at the Games Village entrance on Watt Street at 6.15pm to be welcomed in.

“Afterwards, those with a Games Pass will be able to relax and celebrate at the bar, with food available and music from DJ D-Fresh to get the party going from 7.30pm. Supporter passes and one-night passes will be available for purchase on the night.”

Heather Cox says everyone is encouraged to come down and check the Games Village out, with doors open to the public until 5.00pm. “We’ve put together an eclectic programme over the 10 days including live music, a big quiz and comedy night, and of course plenty of exciting sporting action to watch – or take part in – during the day!”
