Proposed Signage Policy 2018

This policy is a revised version of the existing Signs Bylaw 2015 in order to make the signage rules clearer.

Submissions closed at 4.00pm on Friday, 26 October 2018.

The main changes in the policy are:

  • that local election signs comply with the same rules as national election signs,
  • that existing national legislation is utilised to manage the content of signs
  • to reduce the maximum height of footpath signs from 1.2 meters to one metre within six metres of an intersection or pedestrian crossings.

The move from managing and approving of signs under a bylaw to a policy requires the revocation of the existing Signs Bylaw 2015 and an amendment to the Public Places, Parks and Reserves Bylaw 2016.

The Council considers that the combination of the policy and amended Public Places, Parks and Reserves Bylaw 2016 is the most appropriate way to address signage within public places and does not give rise to implications under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990.
