Restricted fire season – Whanganui coast and urban area

Fire and Emergency NZ has advised that the Manawatū-Whanganui Coastal Zone will move to a restricted fire season from 8am on Friday 12 January until further notice due to warm temperatures, drying winds and a lack of rainfall.
A restricted fire season means anyone planning on lighting an open-air fire will need a permit.
Please be aware of the fire risk conditions – if in doubt, don't light!

Apply for rates remission

For the 2023/24 financial year (starting in July 2023) the council is making a one-off rates remission (reduction) of up to $500 available for households facing a rates rise higher than $700.

Whanganui District Council is currently completing a review of our Parking Bylaw 2017 and Parking Controls, and we are proposing some changes to parking tariffs, meters and exemptions – the proposed changes aim to improve parking management in our town centre and off-set rates rises

Alongside our Long-Term Plan Consultation, we are also seeking feedback on the proposed changes to our Revenue and Financing Policy, Rates Postponement Policy, Rates Remission Policy and Policy on the Remission and Postponement of Rates on Māori Freehold Land; and an increase in fees and charges to reflect increasing costs and inflation.

Development Contributions consultation

At the same time as our Long-Term Plan consultation is underway we are also seeking feedback on some proposed changes to the Development Contributions Policy. The change in the policy extends Development Contributions across the district, widens the scope of applicable growth-related capital projects, updates the demand measures, and adds criteria for remission for certain types of development.
