Discussions

In September 2020 Whanganui Town Centre Regeneration secured central government funding to install a people-friendly streetscape in lower Victoria Avenue. 

Lower Victoria Avenue is Whanganui’s primary dining and nightlife location and the changes will enhance the area as a hospitality and entertainment zone, while celebrating the street’s heritage and history. 

Funding comes from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Innovating Streets initiative, which supports councils to experiment with making streets more vibrant, people-friendly and responsive to climate change. 

In recent months we’ve worked lower Victoria Avenue stakeholders to develop a concept design for the street. 

We’re asking for your feedback on the concept design now and we’ll be asking for ongoing feedback as the project becomes a reality.

The vision is to make lower Victoria Avenue a destination where local and visitors want to meet, eat shop and play. 

We’re enhancing the street by installing seating areas, greenery and art that celebrates and honours the heritage and history of the area.

After submissions close we’ll review your feedback and get to work on finalising the detailed design.

The new streetscape will be installed in July and a street opening celebration event will be held at the end of July.

We’ll then continue to collect community feedback on the changes until May 2022. This will be used to inform decisions about whether the changes are removed, modified or made permanent.
