COVID-19: Facilities

Monday-Friday, 8.30am-5.00pm - Customer Services will open 30 minutes later than usual until further notice.

Service / Facility Status
Public Toilets

All Council public toilets are now open with an increased cleaning schedule. The i-SITE Visitor Information Centre toilets are open to Mud Ducks customers only, due to COVID-19 contact tracing requirements. The nearest toilets for the general public are the Moutoa Gardens/Pakaitore toilets (between Market Place and Bates Street).

Libraries

The Davis Central Library, Gonville Library and Alexander Heritage and Research Library are now open for their normal hours, with numbers limited to maintain physical distancing requirements. See details.

Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua

The Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui is now open. See details.

Whanganui War Memorial Centre

Royal Wanganui Opera House

Box Office open (Monday-Friday, 10.00am-4.00pm). 

Cooks Gardens

Events centre is closed (part of COVID-19 Welfare Distribution Centre). 

Track and velodrome is open.

Durie Hill Elevator   Closed (unable to meet social distancing requirements of 2 metres)
Whanganui i-SITE Visitor Information Centre

Infrastructure building

Closed to the public until further notice.

Whanganui Regional Museum

Whanganui Regional Museum will reopen to visitors on Monday 18 May, 2020 with a limit of 100 people allowed into the building at any one time. Hours are 10.00am to 4.30pm every day and entry is free.

New Zealand Glassworks is open to visitors. Hours are 10.00am-4.30pm, seven days a week. See details.

Whanganui Airport

Whanganui Airport terminal and South Beach Café are closed until further notice.

Splash Centre

The Splash Centre has undergone maintenance and is expected to reopen on Monday, 25 May. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 6.00am-8.00pm and weekends 8.00am-6.00pm.

Parks, Playgrounds and Sportsgrounds

All Council playgrounds, parks and sportsgrounds are open, and public toilets at these facilities have also re-opened

We have taken the extra precaution of cleaning some playground equipment that hasn’t been exposed to the weather during Alert Levels 3 and 4.  

The Winter Gardens at Rotokawau Virginia Lake and the conservatories at Bason Botanic Gardens have re-opened.  

Please exercise safe social distancing (two metres) and hygiene practices at all times if you are visiting playgrounds, parks and sportsgrounds.  

  • Wash and dry your hands or use hand sanitiser before and afterwards
  • Don’t touch your face; cough and sneeze into your elbow
  • Stay off equipment if you have cold or flu symptoms  

Please respect social distancing requirements if contractors are carrying out maintenance in these areas.
