Sport Wanganui is thrilled to announce that, thanks to funding from the Wanganui District Council’s Youth Committee, segments from the 2014 Mitre 10 MEGA Tough Kid (to be held on October 31) will appear on TVNZ’s children’s television programme ‘The 4.30 Show’.

Sport Wanganui’s hugely popular Mitre 10 MEGA Tough Kid event involves primary and intermediate school students aged Year 3-8, all converging on Cooks Gardens in the heart of the city for an exciting day of obstacle racing. Thirty schools attended the event last year, attracting over 1200 participants.

TVNZ’s ‘The 4.30 Show’ is a children’s weekday magazine-style programme broadcasting Monday  to Friday, and produced in Christchurch. The show celebrates young people in New Zealand and promotes fun, entertainment and activities for school-aged children. The show is fronted by Eve Palmer, Michael Lee and Massad Barakat-Devine.

Funding from the Council’s Youth Committee will contribute towards travel and accommodation for the hosts. Filmed on location on the day of the event, segments of the Mitre 10 MEGA Tough Kid® will feature on ‘The 4.30 Show’ at a later date.

Sport Wanganui Event Manager Rachel O’Connor approached the The 4.30 Show earlier this year to pitch the idea.

“Thanks to the funding from the Youth Committee we were able to secure their commitment, and I am really excited to showcase our Wanganui kids and the event on the show,” said Ms O’Connor.

Youth Committee Co-Chair Renee Harrison is “stoked” the Committee could help bring The 4.30 Show hosts to Cooks Gardens to cover the event.

“The Youth Committee agreed this was an opportunity to showcase an exciting event for Whanganui youth on a national level and a way of celebrating the success of the young people who will participate on the day. Supporting this kind of event is what we are all about. The Tough Kid event promotes leadership, fun, team building, health and wellbeing and having our young people showcased on national TV is awesome.”

Entry packs for the event will be delivered directly to schools. Members of the Youth Committee will volunteer at the event as marshals and supporters. Each participant will also have the chance to receive a “player of the day” snap shot in a special photo booth set up by the Youth Committee.
