A new Council-provided and rates funded recycling collection as well as a rates funded rubbish collection service
Waste Minimisation Party Chair Cr Rob Vinsen says the three options have been carefully considered by the Waste Minimisation Working Party, councillors and staff in order to collect the information necessary to shape the Council’s involvement in waste minimisation services at the kerbside.
“Providing kerbside collection services for rubbish and recycling would support residents to send less waste to landfill and recycle more, but before we make a decision we are really keen to see what urban households think.
“Two of our proposed options include a Council-provided collection service, either for just recyclable products or both recycling and rubbish. These options will come at a cost, which will be paid for through rates, although many residents will find that this may be less expensive than what they are currently paying through private waste collection.”
Cr Vinsen says regardless of which option is chosen by the Council, the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre will remain open for recycling, waste minimisation and sustainability initiatives. He says with new residents making Whanganui their home, there is a demand for kerbside collection services.
“People except a kerbside recycling service like that which is provided in other cities in New Zealand. We also hope that if a kerbside service is provided, that in time, a greater amount of products will be able to be collected and recycled at the kerbside and people will participate in recycling to a larger degree because it is easy to do.”
Based on the feedback from the survey, the Council will further consider how kerbside rubbish and recycling collection services are delivered as part of next year’s 2019/20 Annual Plan.
