Food Premises Grading Search

We've introduced a grading system for food businesses so that you can make a more informed decision when choosing a restaurant or buying food.

Shops, restaurants and cafés throughout the Whanganui District are graded from 'A' to 'E' on their standards of cleanliness, food handling and staff training in food safety. An 'A' grade reflects a very low food safety risk at the time of inspection and an 'E' grade identifies serious risks.

Our Food Safety Officers evaluate shops and eateries throughout the district, assessing the standard of premises, food handling and storage practices, cleanliness, health and sickness management, recall and traceability and staff training. The business must comply with the risk-based measure components of the Food Act 2014.

Businesses have a choice of who they register their food business with.
Registration can be with the Whanganui District Council under the Food Act 2014, and a grading is incorporated with the audit. Or registration can be with the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). Once registered with MPI, the food business will be audited by MPI. A food grading certificate will only be issued on request to the Whanganui District Council, when an appropriate fee is paid and grading audit completed. The grading of these premises is not compulsory.
