Whanganui River Road

Following the severe weather event in June 2015 a huge amount of work has been done to repair the Whanganui River Road. This page has the latest updates for work on the Whanganui River Road and surrounding roads.

Major work for Whanganui River Road

Three retaining walls are being constructed along the Whanganui River Road between the Gentle Annie/Aramoana and Parikino.

The work is significant and has involved regular road closures since September 2016. However, from 1 December 2016 the road will be open at the Gentle Annie construction site (5km from State Highway 4) until further notice.

Road closure times previously in place for this section of the Whanganui River Road will not be required until further notice.

Residents and road users are advised that this section of the road is narrow and subject to Priority Give Way signage. Extreme caution is needed.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through the huge task of reinstating the road for the benefit of locals and visitors.

Work near Ruapehu District boundary

The Whanganui District Council has awarded a contract to Higgins Contractors Ltd to construct a retaining wall on the Whanganui River Road 55.7km from the intersection of State Highway 4 and Whanganui River Road. The work is very close to the territorial boundary between Whanganui and Ruapehu Districts.

The site is managed by stop/go traffic control. While short delays may be expected, the work does not require a full road closure. The work is scheduled to be completed by Christmas 2016.
