Proposed Road Naming and Numbering Policy 2018

The Council is consulting on the Proposed Road Naming and Numbering Policy 2018 and we want to ensure the community is involved in the decision-making process.

The naming of public roads and the allocation of property addresses is the responsibility of Local Authorities as assigned under section 319 of the Local Government Act 1974. New roads will generally be named as a result of the subdivision process.

The purpose of this policy is to make sure that new road names and addresses are allocated consistently throughout the Whanganui District.

Roads are named to ensure they are able to be easily identified and located. This is important for the Whanganui District Council, the general public and private services such as emergency, postal and courier services. Road names also help to tell the story of our district through recognising key features, people and places.

Four options are proposed for how we name our new roads in the Whanganui District.

Option one

The developer of the subdivision is invited to submit up to three names in order of preference. This must include reasons for the suggestions, as well as details of any consultation undertaken.

Option two

The developer of the subdivision is invited to submit up to three names in order of preference. The planners will work with the communications team who will notify the public of an opportunity to have their say on which name they prefer of the three.

Option three

An officer from the Whanganui District Council planning team will inform the communications team that an opportunity for the public to provide feedback on a road name is available.

Option four

The developer of the subdivision is invited to submit up to three names in order of preference. These names will be chosen from an inventory list that the planners have. The names on the inventory list will be provided by the public, who will be asked once or twice a year to submit names that developers could potentially use.
