First exhibition at New Zealand Glassworks

21 April 2017

Internationally-renowned artist Christine Cathie is the first to exhibit at New Zealand Glassworks - Te Whare Tūhua o Te Ao (NZG) since its opening last year.

Christine won the New Zealand Glassworks Exhibition Prize at the 2016 Conference for the New Zealand Society of Artists in Glass in Auckland. Christine has previously exhibited in Paris, New York, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand.

NZG Manager Scott Redding, who awarded the NZG Members’ Exhibition prize to Christine, said the large-scale cast glass sculptures were impressive and beautifully made.

“It’s great to be exhibiting an artist of this calibre in Whanganui.”

Based in Auckland, Christine says she is interested in the “definition of space through the physical form and in the paradoxes of these forms – how the glass can look balanced yet looks precarious; fragile yet has strength; and weightless, yet with form and substance”.

The exhibition, Balance, closes on Wednesday, 31 May 2017. New Zealand Glassworks is situated at 2 Rutland Street.
